AI hardware firm Nvidia unveils next-gen products at Taiwan tech expo
Nvidia has unveiled new products and plans to accelerate the advance of artificial intelligence, with the AI hardware company's CEO telling a packed stadium in Taipei on Sunday that "the next Industrial Revolution has begun". Jensen Huang is in Taiwan for the island's leading tech expo, Computex, along with the CEOs of some of the world's biggest semiconductor companies โ including AMD, Intel and Qualcomm โ and their plans for a tech industry dominated by AI are top of the agenda. Taiwan-born Huang has celebrity status on the island, and there was huge media and public interest in his visit thanks in large part to Nvidia's status as the undisputed leader in the specialised chips and hardware needed to build and run cutting-edge AI. "Companies and countries are partnering with Nvidia to shift the trillion-dollar traditional data centres to accelerated computing and build a new type of data centre โ AI factories โ to produce a new commodity: artificial intelligence," Huang told the crowd at National Taiwan University's sports centre. He announced the general availability of Nvidia ACE generative AI, which can create lifelike human avatars for industries such as customer support. He also outlined how some top tech companies such as Taiwan's Foxconn โ the world's largest contract electronics manufacturer โ and German industrial firm Siemens are using Nvidia's platforms to develop AI-powered autonomous robots.

Rishi Sunak's advisers are trying to thrash out an agreement among world leaders on a statement warning about the risks of artificial intelligence as they finalise the agenda for the AI safety summit next month. Downing Street officials have been touring the world talking to their counterparts from China to the EU and the US as they work to agree on words to be used in a communique at the two-day conference. But they are unlikely to agree a new international organisation to scrutinise cutting-edge AI, despite interest from the UK in giving the government's AI taskforce a global role. Sunak's AI summit will produce a communique on the risks of AI models, provide an update on White House-brokered safety guidelines and end with "like-minded" countries debating how national security agencies can scrutinise the most dangerous versions of the technology. The possibility of some form of international cooperation on cutting-edge AI that can pose a threat to human life will also be discussed on the final day of the summit on 1 and 2 November at Bletchley Park, according to a draft agenda seen by the Guardian.
